A belated Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all. I guess I've really gotten lazy in my old age, or there just wasn't that much to write about, but here I am back at the keyboard to bring you all up to date on the Company's happenings. In December we had our elections. The following are the results. For the Company: Captain
...Sean (Pez) Brennan
For the Department: Chief of Department
..Thomas McDermott (Truck Co. 1) 2nd Assistant Chief .Timothy Biscay (Hose Co. 3) 3rd Assistant Chief ..Robert Sutton Sr. (Engine Co. 1) Department Secretary Anthony Dasaro (Hose Co. 1) Ass't. Dept. Secretary Alex Alfaro (Engine Co. 1) Department Treasurer ..Gary Fish (Engine Co. 1) Ass't Dept. Treasurer Vincent Calderone (Truck Co. 1) 2nd Batt. Delegate (3 year term)..Daniel Sabintino
For the Oceanside Fire District: Commissioner (5 year term) ..Craig DeBaun (Hose Co. 1)
For Explorer Post 246: Captain
..Nick Marino We wish all the elected officers well and hope they all have a very successful term. Also in December, the Company had its annual adults and children's Christmas parties. Both were huge successes. I know that my 2 year old grandaughter sure did enjoy dancing with Elmo. Since my last news letter, the Company has accepted three new members into its ranks. George Serviss, Brian Hall and Michael Tierney. George brings to our Company many years of experience as he served as Captain in OFD's Hose Company 2. Brian comes with a bit of experience from our neighbor to the south, the Island Park FD and is also a member of the OFD Band. Mike is new to the fire service, but learning fast. This brings our Company strength up to 39 members which we haven't seen in quite some time. Also I'm pleased to report that Probationary Firefighter Joe Pontercorvo, has shed is Orange Probbie shield and is now a Class A firefighter. Congratulations to all. Talking about Probbie Firefighters. Our Captain will have shed his orange shield in New York City by the time this is printed and I'm sure in a few years he'll be changing it again to a white front. On Tuesday, January 2nd. Our Company responded to its first alarm of the New Year. We were called on Mutual Aid to the Hewlett Fire Department to a large apartment house fire. We worked over two hours and pumped to Lynbrook 's Engine 424 through their five inch hose. The Lieutenant of Lynbrook 's 424, Mike is engaged to our own Sgt. at Arms, Nicole. Nothing like keeping it all in the family. I beat Ex-Chief John to the seat at this one, but John rode along and helped me at the pump panel during the fire. Captain Pez remarked. "Our first call and it wasn't even in our town. Well since yesterday we've had five more calls and all within town. Now for an update on a few of our members who went under the knife. As reported in our last news letter, Ex-Chief Bob (Rube) Pfirmann had a large tumor discovered on his liver. First they had to shrink it with chemo before they could operate on it. Well i'm pleased to report the chemo worked and Rube had his operation in December and was home for Christmas. He has contacted us and everything seems to coming along well and he's had his staples removed (42 of them) the other day. Our other member, Ex-Capt. Ron Deardoff had his knee replaced and is now recovering nicely from that too. Back to our Explorer Post. This year our Captain is going to get them more involved with the Company. They will get more training with us and also work around the quarters with us. They have a nice group and the membership is growing steadily. This should make things more interesting for them. Heard at the Company meeting last night that the new 2462 should be arriving sometime in February. Don't know too much about it other then it's made by American LaFrance. When it finally arrives I'm sure we'll get a picture on our page for all to see. Well, looks like I'm done with my rambling for awhile so in closing, remember what I always say When you train, train like your life depends on it, because it just might.
Sincerely,
Oceanside Hose Company no. 1
