Well here we are in a new year. Actually almost half way this year and this is the first news update. I’m afraid I’m getting lazy in my old age.

Hopefully this will bring you all up to date with the happenings of the Company.

Our Captain, Rich, resigned and our former Captain Sean  A.K.A. Pez was elected to his old position as Captain. We picked up a new member, Mike Marciano. Yep , the younger brother of our 1st. Lieutenant. Mike comes to us from our Explorer Post where he served as their Lieutenant. Looks like Mike is going to be saddled with the nickname of “Pebbles” as big brother Chris is “Rocky”. Mike will be graduating from high school in a few weeks where he is an honor student. I’m sure he’s going to do his brother proud in the Company. Another Mike , this one Martini successfully has completed his probationary period and will now shed is orange “probie” helmet shield for a black 246 front piece. Congratulations Mike.

The Memorial Day parade has come and gone and the Company had a good turn out. We had 26 of our members out which is better then 75 % Always nice to march in your hometown with your friends and neighbors cheering you on. It was especially good to see 61 year member Hon. Ex-Captain “Uncle Pete” Hendrickson on Long Beach Road with his lovely wife Dottie waving as we marched by. After the parade we had our annual “Ramp Party” and Captain Pez did some fine cooking on the bar-b-que.

Next month our honorary member Tom Dee will behaving his annual July 4th. Day sale at his nursery and we’ll have our Chuck Wagon there for him with the food and refreshments. In August, we’re planning to host the Cole Brothers Circus back in town and they always put on a good show for the community. I know my grandkids always look forward to going and riding on the elephants.

Heard from one of our former Lieutenants, Rob Spurlock, who is a fireman down in Norfolk Virginia. He had quite a scare last month when a tornado tore through is hometown of Suffolk. He was picking his children from day care when it hit and though it rattled his pickup truck, fortunately no one was injured. His house did suffer damage , but Rob has written us that it could have been a lot worse .

Former Chief Bob “Rube” Pfirmann keeps us informed that He and Connie are doing better now and he keeps busy doing fire safety programs for the Manteca (Ca.) Fire Department.

One of our real “Old Timers”, Tracy “Taters” Noon, who is over 90 still gets around town on his bicycle. Taters doesn’t ride one of those Florida type senior citizen bike, but a regular two wheeler. Last month some slime stole Taters bike and he took to hitch hiking. Now that was a sight, fortunately, when some of us saw him, we’d pick him up and take him to his destination. Now Taters is an independent type of a guy and I see he has a new bike under him again now.

George Serviss was out of commission with a bad ankle for awhile, but I see he’s back on active duty again. Missed George as he’s a valuable member of that afternoon crew.

Some more nice news. Our Ex-Captain John ( JT ) Madden was recently hired off the Civil Service list by the Nassau County Fire Marshal’ Office as a Fire Marshal. We wish him much success in his new career.

Happened to check our Guest Book and I see a couple of our “old” legends had checked in. For those that remember Ian “Iggy” Stewart and Ex-Captain Stephen “Bumps” Bono who between the two spent a lot of time on the couches stacking up ZZZZZs in the Company room, and then there was “Mr. Fuji” a product of the OFD Juniors back in the late ‘80s. They sure brought back memories to me, especially Steph Bono who was the Captain when I was the Chief of the Department. To answer your question, Steph, yep your picture still adorns the wall with the rest of the Captains of our Company, and I still remember that night 30 years ago when you and the rest of my Captains took me out to dinner and you were behind the wheel of the Chief’s car. (We survived)

Looks like I’ve run out of steam, but as you can see from the above paragraphs, this is one of the purposes of the news letter to let some of you former members know what’s happening to your “old” Company . If there is any news you’d like to submit to bring us up to date about what you’ve been up to lately, e-mail I and I put it in the news letter.  So until my next… Stay Well and Stay Safe and remember When you train, train like your life depends on it, because it just might.

Sincerely,
Ex-Chief Bob Jacoby
