Well here I am back to my old habits and just getting around to updating our company's news. When I wrote last, I mentioned that our captain was a probie all over again and going to the FDNY Fire Academy . Well 13 weeks have come and gone and Captain “Pez” is just about ready to graduate and get his assignment. He did real well and was appointed Squad Leader of his group. I believe that entitles him to pick his assignment upon graduation. Knowing the Capt., I'll bet it's not a City Island company.

The “Crew” is back from the first portion of our 100 th . Anniversary celebration. That being an extended weekend down in the Bahamas . All that went had a great time and believe it or not, they all returned. One or two without their luggage though. The good old airlines will do it every time. Then on April 6 th , the actual date of our anniversary, after our company meeting us all went out to Sole' in Oceanside for our annual ex-captain's dinner. I was asked to give Fred's annual toast and as usual I stumbled over a few of the words. I'm sure Fred was looking down at me and just shaking his head. One of these years I'll get it right (I hope). The company will have one more “blast” (a dinner dance) with our wives or guests come April 29 th . Former Chief “Rube” Pfirmann and his lovely wife Connie are hoping to come in from California for this, but I recently received an e-mail from Rube and he said Connie had a nasty fall and her back is in pretty bad shape. They have their fingers crossed all will be right in time to make the dinner celebration and we all do also.

Finally one of the staff writers from the 1 st Responder Newspaper stopped by the company, took some pictures and said he'd try to get an article in the paper about our anniversary.

The Company picked up a new member this month. Joe Pontecorvo joined our ranks after coming over from our neighbors from the south, the Island Park Fire Department. We welcome him and wish him well and a long career in our Company.

The Company lost two members though. Marty Beverly, our Sunday morning breakfast chef has moved out of the Fire District so has to change his status from active to in-active, and with deep regret I have to report that Ex-Captain Tom Murray has passed away.

Tom was Captain for two terms back in 1962 thru 1964 and I was his 1 st Lieutenant. Tom was also a Nassau County Police Officer, assigned to the Highway Patrol Bureau. Tom was very active in the International Association of Police and the USA chapter President. When Tom retired from the NCPD , he moved his family down to Apoka , Florida . Whenever Tom came back up north he always made it his business to stop in and say hello. Our sympathies go out to Tom's wife Joan and the rest of his family.

Before we know it the Memorial Day parade will be here. That means in the coming weeks we'll be starting our annual Memorial Day clean up around the fire house and especially getting the trucks ready for the parade.

Our Company Secretary, Radar, has told me, he'd like to get the monthly calander posted on this web site. So be on the lookout because I'm sure as soon as Tony gets a chance he'll put the calendar on the menu.

FLASH, FLASH, FLASH: It's just been reported that upon graduation from the fire academy that our captain will be assigned to Ladder Company 169. This company shares quarters with ENGINE COMPANY 246. Seems like Captain Pez is still loyal to his roots. Good luck Captain with your assignment, but I have a feeling you'll be wanting to walk over to the other bay and getting on 246 before long. Once an engine man always an engine man. Remember what Vicky says. “The real reason that that truckies cuts holes in the roof is so they can watch the engine men work”.

This should catch you all up to the Company's happenings, so until next. Stay Well and Stay Safe and remember “When you train, train like your life depends on it , because it just might”

Sincerely,
Ex-Chief Bob Jacoby
