Hello again to all. It's been a few months since our last Company news update, so here we go. Winter has come and gone with little snow to show for it, but plenty of COLD. Grass and leaves are now sprouting and with the spring came our long awaited and brand new 2462. The rig is now in service and I've been assured that shortly pictures will appear on our web. It's a good looking truck and has lots of compartment space for the diversified equipment that we carry. As a my ever going saga of “small world” goes on, the salesman of the truck , John Olson and I go back many, many years together as instructors at the Nassau County Fire Academy. John is also a former chief of the Westbury Fire Department and I hadn't seen John since I retired from the Academy three years ago. As I mentioned above, grass and leaves are now sprouting and with this brought a new landscaping project to the front of the Fire House. Our Captain and his crew with their “green” thumbs have done a great job sprucing up the front and now they are attacking the side yard. Once again when pictures of 2462 are taken, maybe our photographer, Tony, will get a shot or two of the landscaping. The Captain posted the members with the most fire responses for the first quarter of the year. This is based on the 100 or so runs the Company was assigned to. # 1 Commissioner Craig Debaun 87 # 2 Ex-Capt. George Serviss 81 # 3 Firefighter Chris Marciano 70 # 4 Former Chief Bob Jacoby 69 #4 Firefighter Matt Lewis 69 #5 Former Chief John Traverso 65 #6 Ex-Capt. Jim Garvey 62 In addition the Company responded to three mutual aid calls. The first as reported previously was to assist the Hewlett FD with an apartment house fire in January. The next two were both on the same day in March. First we responded over to East Rockaway and filled in at their headquarters while they worked a house fire and shortly thereafter we responded to Lynbrook to a store on fire. Busy day for the lads of Engine 246. A couple of weeks ago, we responded to a working boat fire. I could see the smoke when I pulled out of my driveway. It started over on the East Rockaway of the inlet and drifted over to the Oceanside side. Unfortunately to a backyard dock of one of the houses. The Company got on the scene pretty quickly and held the fire just to the boat, but one of our members, Ex-Catp. George Service tore a muscle in his chest and will be out of service for a couple of months. George is also the driver of the Company's tournament team's truck so it doesn't look like the eggnoggers will be a motorized team this year. Get well soon George. The Company has had a few membership changes too since my last news letter. Ex-Captain Steve Capobianco has moved over to Merrick and joined the Merrick FD, so he's now on our in-active list and one of our newer members has resigned from the Company. We have taken two new members on and they come from a family of firefighters. Mike Martini is the younger brother of Tony our web master. Mike comes from our Explorer Post where he rose to the position of Captain. Mike's dad, Ray, is a long time member of the Valley Stream FD (Engine Co.3). Our other new member is Ryan Dawson who also comes from our Explorer Post where he too rose to the rank of Captain. Ryan's dad, Bob, is an Ex-Captain of our Company and his older brother Robbie is also a member here. You can see that our two newest probes are no strangers to the Company. I received an e-mail from Former Chief “Rube” Pfirmann recently. His wife Connie has finished her chemo treatments and with the exception of feeling tired she doing better. Rube goes for a full body scan in a couple of weeks and we all hope he gets a good report. He keeps himself busy doing fire prevention programs for the Manteca ( Cal. ) FD where he volunteers. Memorial Day parade is just around the corner which means the clean up of the rigs are in full swing. Department inspection of the rigs will be the Sunday before the parade and we're looking to come out number one again like last year. After the parade on Monday we'll be having our annual “ramp” bar-b-q. Looking for a good turnout, so polish those shoes, press off the uniform and show the residents of Oceanside what we look like. Members will soon be sporting new 246 baseball hats thanks to member Brian Hall. Brian got a few samples and a good price and quite a few of us signed up for the hats and they should be in shortly. Our Explorer Post is in full swing, and adding new members. They had their annual breakfast fund raiser April 15 th . Unfortunately right in the middle of the nor'easter, but those who came and ate had plenty of good food. Our Captain served as the chef and didn't even burn himself. Well, looks like I'm done with my rambling for awhile so in closing, remember what I always say “When you train, train like your life depends on it, because it just might”.
Sincerely,
Oceanside Hose Company no. 1
