Well Summer has come and gone and the Captain reminded me that it was time for me to get back to work and get our Company news updated so here goes. The Cole Brother's Circus has come and gone. It turned out to be a huge success and as of now I believe plans are being made to have it again next year. I know I took three of my grandkids to it and they had a great time. Over the summer we picked up two new members, Kevin Fortin transferred in from Truck Company and Jimmy Holmes transferred in from Hose Company 2. Kevin's pop is a former chief of the Department and his brother-in law is our former captain and present 1st lieutenant, J.T.Madden. Jimmy brings with him over 20 years of firematic experience with him and has been a member of our Company's racing team. They are both welcome additions to our roster. Congratulations to Matt Mayo. He shed his “Probie” shield for an Engine 246 one. I think that just leaves us with one probie, but there are a couple of new applicants looking to come in shortly. We had a couple of engagements since last I wrote. Captain “Pez” got himself engaged to Nicole and Nicole got engaged to Mike. Confused ?? Well let me explain. The Captain's Nicole and Mike's Nicole are not the same ladies. Mike's Nicole is our Sgt. at Arms Nicole Maurer. Mike is a member of the Lynbrook Fire Department so when their big day arrives hopefully they'll decide to reside in Oceanside . We congratulate both couples and wish them much happiness. Talking about our Captain. he's sporting burns on his wrist that he acquired while on the job in FDNY. I asked him if he was wearing his gloves when it happened and he said “nope” . Well I quickly reverted to my “old” instructor days and got on his case about not wearing gloves and asked him if it was a big fire? He quickly put a sheepish grin on his face and said it happened at their quarters. Then he saw the look on my face and quickly added in the kitchen. Capt., my advice to you after you and Nicole tie the knot, let her do the cooking. Received some distressing news the other day from Former Chief Bob “Rube” Pfirmann. Now that his wife is finally getting back on her feet after that nasty fall she took last April, he has to start chemo to shrink a tumor that they discovered on his liver. If the chemo does what it's supposed to do and shrinks the tumor , then his doctors will operate and remove it. Rube's seems to be in good spirits and our prayers go out to him that all will turn out alright. On Sunday , September 24 th . the “boys” will head up to the Firemen's Home in Hudson to visit with Bob Preudomme. This year will be little different as it will be a family day. Tommy Pelligrino will be driving the department bus again , but this year the navigator won't be able to go to show him the way. I'll be off in St. Louis at my annual army reunion so I'll miss the trip. After visiting at the Home , all are invited across the Hudson to Schoharie to Ex-Captain Phil Metzger's for a bar-b-que. This is the first time the family members are going and I know they'll have a great time going thru the fire museum and then over at Phil's farm. Phil raises chickens, goats , and pigs and lets children come and feed his animals. I'm just wondering now that I'm not going, if they'll make a pit stop on Rt. 82 on the way home at my favorite ice cream stand ? The end of this month , the Company will be back at Dee 's nursery for their annual shrub sale. The Chuck Wagon is all spruced up and we'll be feeding Dee 's customers our usual hamburgers and hot dogs . Then we'll be back again for the Christmas season for our final assist of the year. Well that's it for now. I hope you all had an enjoyable summer. Until next time STAY WELL , STAY SAFE , SAY A LITTLE PRAYER for Former Chief Pfirmann and KEEP HIM IN YOUR THOUGHTS In closing, remember what I always say “When you train, train like your life depends on it, because it just might”.
Sincerely,
Oceanside Hose Company no. 1
