Well it's been a few months since our last company news in May and we have entered the “Dog Days” of August. It seems like I have a lot of catching up to report on. First off congratulations go out to “probie” members Ryan Dawson and Mike Martini on their graduation from High School. Mike will be heading down to Washington DC for college and Ryan will be going to college locally. The 4 th . of July sale at Dee 's Nursery which we do every year has come and gone. The weather on the 4th was great for the sale. It wasn't really a beach day so the lines were long and the crowd was constant. We had our Canteen Wagon 246-30 there and the crews were serving doughnuts, coffee and cold drinks to the customers. Over the weekend the weather was better for going down to the beach, so it was quite as crowded, but I think our member Tom Dee did quite well. Here's some news about a few of our members. Brian Hall has successfully completed his probation period and has shed his orange helmet shield for a black 246 one. Joe Pontercorvo has graduated from the NYPD Academy and has decided to go back in to the Island Park FD where he lives. Ex-Captain Ed Nau has retired to North Carolina and Firefighter Nick Greco has left the Company for Colorado where he is now working. Our oldest living member Tracy “Taters” Noon turned 90 and is still riding his bicycle all over town. We send our congratulations out to all those members on their accomplishments and say a sad good bye to those who have left us. Our annual picnic was held on the 4th of August and was very well attended. Credit for its success should go to Chris “Rocky” Marciano whos job it was to put this year's picnic together. The weather couldn't have been better and though I couldn't make it this year, I'm told that they were still there at 8 o'clock in the night. Good turn out the next day to go back and finish cleaning up. Again we thank our member Fire Commissioner Craig DeBaun for the use of his camp. Cole Brother's circus has come and gone and it appears to have been a nice success averaging over 1000 in attendance at each performance. Captain Brennan thanked all who help out with the ticket sales and assisting with the parking control. The committee did a nice job and looks like the circus will be back in town again next year. Our condolences go out to out our Company Trustee and Honorary Ex-Captain Henry Emilio and his family for the loss of his wife Alice, and also to Firefighter Matt Lewis over the loss of his grandfather. Before we realize it September will be here and we hope to be putting a trip together to visit our former member Bob Preudhomme up at the State Firemen's Home. We'll combine this trip with extending it across the Hudson River and visit Ex-Captain Phil Metzger and his wife Pam at his farm in Schoharie. It's always been a fun day and each time we go we usually pick up one or two more members in attendance. As usual Former Chief Tom Pellegrino will behind the wheel of the bus and also as usual I'll be giving him directions . On the way home, we'll be stopping off at the ice-cream stand on Rt 82, and hopefully it won't have closed for the season yet. Finally , our Explorer Post 246 is doing quite well under the leadership of it's Captain Mike ( Pebbles ) Marciano. Seems like it picked up a few new members to replace the ones that have moved up to join the Department. In closing , I hope you've all had a good summer so until my next news letter, always remember, “When you train , train like your life depends upon it , because it just might.”
Sincerely,
Oceanside Hose Company no. 1
